Community![]() Morgan Stanley is committed to doing its share as a responsible corporation by improving the quality of life in the communities where our employees live and work. In addition to providing extensive financial support to our key charitable priority areas - children’s health and education, diversity and cultural programmes - we encourage our employees to give something back to their communities.
We believe exceptional people need to be nurtured by, among other things, facing frequent and diverse challenges which help their personal development. Our volunteering programme does just this. It helps employees learn new skills, share expertise, and gain new insights and perspectives. Each year, all employees have a day off to work in the community, typically on a team-based project. In addition, regular volunteering opportunities are available including:
For 2006, employees elected the British Health Foundation. Charities elected in previous years include: Age Concern Barnardo’s Winged Fellowship Trust Community Links The Children's Fund at The Royal London Hospital Richard House Trust Marie Curie Cancer Care NSPCC Macmillon Cancer Relief Employees can also request grants from the Firm that match fundraising activity or regular volunteering they do in their own time. In addition, employees can make monthly charitable donations from their salary through the Give As You Earn (GAYE) scheme.
Following an analysis of MSIF's funding strategy, the Trustees of the Foundation identified education, training and employment as the key areas on which the Firm should focus its community programme. As one of the biggest employers in an area of high unemployment and low educational attainment, we believe that we can, and should, help to try to reverse the current situation. In 1995, the Trustees of MSIF, with the full support of Senior Management, decided to establish an Employee Volunteering Programme which focuses primarily on working with several schools on the Isle of Dogs to help to improve their pupils' literacy, numeracy and communication skills. With the assistance of the Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership (THEBP), and following talks with the Headteachers, a strong partnership has been established with four primary schools, Arnhem Wharf, St Edmunds, Woolmore and Old Ford, and one secondary school, George Green's. Since their launch in March 2000, the schemes have developed and grown. We currently have over 150 volunteers working regularly in our partnership schools, participating in a variety of initiatives as follows: Arnhem Wharf Primary School: Reading, Number and IT Partner Schemes, and Language Partners Woolmore Primary School: Reading Partners St Edmund's RC Primary School: Reading, Number and IT Partner Schemes, and Football Partners Old Ford Primary School: Young Enterprise Primary Programme; Reading Partners. George Green's Secondary School: Reading and Science Partners and E-Mentoring In addition, we have volunteers acting as school Governors at all five schools, and we also run Business Mentoring with Aylwin School for Girls, and Secondary Language Mentoring with Swanlea School. Opportunities also exist with a variety of schools within Tower Hamlets for business mentoring through programmes run by Tower Hamlets EBP, Young Enterprise and Businessdynamics. In 2005 as part of the Firm's sponsorship of the Old Vic theatre, we participated in the communications programme "Soapbox" in our partnership schools. Every permanent employee is entitled to spend a day each year volunteering through the Firm's community programme.
